Lego Program

Building Social Communication Through Play

This program provides social communication opportunities for older children and adolescents through Lego Building activities. We use Lego building and related activities to target pragmatic language concepts including sharing, turn taking, using eye contact and following social rules. Participants will be encouraged to converse and solve social problems with peers in small groups independently while being provided with the support necessary to succeed.

Through engagement with evidence-based treatment activities, participants will build social competence alongside peers with similar skills throughout a series of guided small group sessions. Since participants will be working toward independent age-appropriate social communication, parents and caregivers will be encouraged to participate to support their child’s social communication. Those parental supports will then be faded throughout the program to encourage independence.

In addition to the group component, an individual session will be scheduled for each participant either before or after the group. Sessions that occur prior to the appointment would be a review of the skills that will be targeted in the upcoming session. Individual sessions after would debrief the session and discuss what went well and what could be improved upon for the next meeting

Components of the group will include:

  • Virtual or in-person Speech Language Pathology evaluation to determine a plan of care based on current level of functioning and family goals
  • Weekly individual treatment sessions with a licensed SLP focusing on learning and practicing social skills in a highly structured setting
  • Weekly group treatment sessions with peers lead by a licensed SLP focused on natural interactions and generalization of concepts discussed individual treatment sessions
  • Customized home program designed to encourage generalization of social skills to all settings
